A Nasa anunciou nesta terça-feira (10) a descoberta, pelo telescópio espacial Kepler, de 1.284 novos planetas fora do nosso sistema solar.

"Este anúncio mais do que duplica o número de exoplanetas descobertos pelo telescópio Kepler", indicou Ellen Stofan, cientista-chefe da agência espacial americana.

"Isso nos dá esperança de que em algum lugar lá fora, em torno de uma estrela muito parecida com a nossa, poderemos, eventualmente, descobrir um planeta parecido com a Terra", acrescentou.

O observatório espacial Kepler, que foi lançado em 2009, monitorou 150.000 estrelas em busca de sinais de corpos em órbita, particularmente aqueles que poderiam ser capazes de sustentar a vida.

Este trabalho se faz através da observação de um escurecimento da luz da estrela, conhecido como trânsito, cada vez que um planeta passa orbitando diante dela.

"Dos cerca de 5.000 candidatos a planetas encontrados até agora, mais de 3.200 já foram verificados, e 2.325 deles foram descobertos pelo Kepler", indicou a Nasa em um comunicado.

A nova descoberta inclui cerca de 550 corpos que poderiam ser planetas rochosos como a Terra, com base em seu tamanho, segundo a agência espacial americana.

"Nove destes novos planetas descobertos orbitam zonas habitáveis do seu sol, que é a distância de uma estrela onde podem registrar temperaturas que permitam a existência de água em forma líquida", prosseguiu.

Esses nove exoplanetas potencialmente habitáveis se somam aos 21 outros exoplanetas já conhecidos por orbitarem a zona habitável de suas estrelas.
