Um novo tipo de estrela, que permanece silenciosa durante longos períodos de tempo antes de exalar uma nuvem de fumaça, foi descoberta pelos cientistas. O estudo foi publicado nesta sexta-feira, 26, no boletim mensal da Royal Astronomical Society.

Apelidadas de "velhas fumantes", estão localizadas no coração da Via Láctea. São gigantes vermelhas, astros que no final da vida adquirem esse tamanho e uma baixa temperatura superficial. Por sua cor pálida e avermelhada, "às vezes não é possível vê-las", explica Dante Minniti, da Universidade Andrés Bello.

Ao longo de dez anos de pesquisa, foram analisadas centenas de milhões de estrelas utilizando o telescópio Vista, localizado no Chile. A busca era por estrelas recém-nascidas, chamadas protoestrelas, que são propensas a erupções frequentes e exuberantes.

A investigação detectou 32 protoestrelas, "o maior número encontrado até agora em apenas um grupo", disse o astrofísico Philip Lucas, professor da Universidade de Hertfordshire, no Reino Unido, e principal autor de um novo estudo.

No entanto, encontraram esse novo tipo de estrela, uma exalação que não havia sido detectada até agora, acrescenta Philip.
